This tea is naturally sweet with a mouth feel and taste that recall brown sugar granules. Make sure you brew it just below boiling point to achieve this sweetness, or brew at 100 degrees and let it sit for a minute or two. I brewed it gongfu cha style, with a generous amount of leaves and a quick steep. Overall this is a very good black tea from Fujian.
Lapsang Souchong, otherwise known as Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong 正山小种, is considered to be the original black tea with a history extending well over 400 years.
The tea we present here is the original Lapsang Souchong 'non-smoked' hong cha style of tea. It yields a rich 'non aggressive' brew having virtually no astringency and a silky character. It is clean and bright on the palate with accents of dried plum and a delicate malty finish.
The traditional name adopted in the Fujian province is Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong [正山小种], 'Small Leaf Variety from the Original Mountain'. Or just call it "Non-smoked Lapsang Souchong".
The smoked style, which was adopted in the west, evolved through interesting “accidents“ or unexpected, shall we say, turn of events.
Certainly a number of batches that were dumped in the Boston Harbour during the great 'Boston Tea Party' included Lapsang Souchong 'smoky style'.
This tea here however is the original non-smoke style and is a welcome addition to our extending Sōshin Tea line - here a hong cha black tea variety.
Recommend you try 6-7 grams in in a 150 ml vessel for a series of quick flash steeps gradually extending in length for a rewarding and unique brew to sip.
